For our latest installment of classic cocktails, I wanted to share with you one of my go-to cocktails, the classic gin martini! If any of you are the martini types, you probably have your favorite way to order your cocktail. Martinis are so customizable, they are a great standard drink to order at dinner or to make for dinner guests! Plus, once you decide how you take your martini, you’ll look like a pro in front of your friends and co-workers!

Here’s what to decide:

  • gin or vodka | gin for more interest, vodka for a simpler flavor
  • wet, dry or perfect | more or less dry vermouth or equal parts dry and sweet vermouth
  • stirred or shaken | stirred yields a smoother cocktail
  • straight up or on the rocks | straight up is the traditional way to order
  • with a twist (lemon)
  • Gibson (with an onion)
  • dirty (with olive brine)
  • Vesper (gin, vodka and Lillet)

I prefer my martini with gin, dry, stirred, straight up with a twist. Right now we have Farmer’s Botanical Organic Gin at home, which is a very complex gin. The resulting martini is not nearly as clean, but I love all the flavors of juniper, elderflower, lemon grass, coriander and angelica root! If herbal flavor is not for you, try this recipe with a more simple gin or with vodka.

Classic Dry Martini with a Twist (5:1 ratio):

  • 2 1/2 ounces gin
  • 1/2 ounce dry vermouth
  • lemon peel

Add ice to shaker, then gin and vermouth. Stir gently. Strain into chilled coupe or martini glass. Garnish with lemon peel. Cheers!
