At this point, the concrete has all been poured and has cured over several days. If you look back at part 2, you can see how much lighter the concrete looks after it has dried out.
Taylor began chipping away at his masterpiece by removing the inner molds first (those around the cook-top and sink).
To remove the sink mold, Taylor cut a diamond shape so that the foam could be pushed down into the sink rather than lifted up and out. This was to put the least amount of stress possible on the concrete.
Once Taylor removed all of the molds, he sanded down any rough edges. Once the concrete looked to our liking, Taylor sealed the concrete with a water based concrete sealer with a satin finish.
The final step was installing all of the appliances that connected to the countertop. This is when we really began to get excited about the final project. It all finally started coming together!
We have loved our new countertops so far and are excited to put up the backsplash next weekend! Once the backsplash tile is put into place, everything will finally look finished… well, except for the yellowy oven – that will really be the last upgrade to our kitchen renovation. So close!!
Let me know if you have any questions about this project and I will be happy to go into more detail with you. I highly recommend this project if you have the gusto to take it on. The result is a beautiful and modern countertop at a super reasonable price.
